While we certainly have made significant advances in vocal recognition, its the context-sensitive nature of so much of our language that I find to be the remaining hurdle for a conversational user interface.

I think Star Trek had it right though.  We’ll interact with our electronics in a variety of ways; opting for whatever is optimal for the task we’re trying to accomplish.    It’s not that we’ll forget the GUI.   I think it will just take on more of a supplementary role in our interactions with the machines.
