So this is important, and if you’re in one of the groups designated ‘higher-risk’ then it certainly pertains to you.

Syphilis testing is recommended for higher-risk groups every three months instead of annually.

In 2000 the US had 4 cases per 100,000 people, largely isolated to specific locations and within certain population groups.

The CDC was working to wipe it out of our population and expecting victory. Perhaps by virtue of even announcing that they were they brought about their own defeat. Since 2000 rates of infection have trended steadily upward. Something like 20,000 cases (presumably still per 100,000 people) in 2014.

They ended their program to eliminate Syphilis from the US population in 2013.

So you should get checked more frequently and if you’re in a population group determined to be at higher risk you should be getting checked every 3 months.

Since you’re there anyway you should also get checked for Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and HIV. It’s pretty quick and mostly painless.

You should also get comfortable discussing your sexual health with your qualified medical providers. We need to collectively stop failing our society by letting ourselves get squeamish around sex and its impact on our health and well-being.

Especially be honest with your doctor.

Stay safe. Happy hunting.

  1. To be fair, one of my doctors isn’t especially open for discussion, on much, let alone sexual activity. Just yesterday he completely disregarded the numbness I’ve had in my right hand, after he made me get an MRI for it.
