This has been in the works for some time. One of the things NASA has been doing that is forward-thinking is leveraging resources already out there to faciliate communications with new equipment. Such as using the orbiters to communicate with landers on Mars and relay information back to earth. Having a communications infrastructure in place out there, means we don’t have to build it all into the spacecraft, which leaves room for more science.
