Knowing is half the battle.

Knowing is half the battle.

Yes, actually.. we can fix this world.  You just don’t want to do it.

  1. I imagine there is some debate on where, exactly, the poverty line should be drawn.   Certain degree of relativity there, since I’m super-wealthy in comparison to most of my fellow earthlings.

  3. I’ve spent a long time reading about developmental economics and the developed world has spent trillions over the years fighting poverty.  I totally agree that fighting poverty is a better use of money than defence, even if your goal is security.  However, poverty is an extremely difficult problem to solve.  It’s not a matter of just spending a few billion here or there.

  5. We spend trillions on lots of things with little return.   135 billion probably would solve the problem, if spent correctly.   Not that I have any idea what correctly would be.    However it strikes me that the bulk of our issue is the economic mindset we’ve been perpetuating so long.   Systems need to fundamentally change, and that’s what makes the problems difficult to solve.

  7. Let’s say 3 billion people live on $2 a day or less. That’s $600 per year for a total of $1.8 T per year.  To double that income, to a measly $4 a day would require $1.8 T per year, or a little less than the U.S. Federal budget and far more than the DOD’s budget.  For reference, the U.S. poverty line is $31 per day.  To bring everyone in the world to the U.S. poverty line, you would have to somehow costlessly redistribute 75% of total world GDP.  Simply put, poverty cannot be solved by transfers.

  9. That illustrates, rather pointedly, how subjective the meaning of the word ‘poverty’ is.   Like I said, compared to most of my fellow earthlings… I’m not only not in poverty, I’m a rich bitch!      Systems need to fundamentally change if these kinds of things are going to have solutions put forth that actually work.    Our economic systems are, frankly, a big part of this particular problem and a barrier to its resolution.
