When naming your children…   when you do things like non-standard spellings, or ALL CAPS, or other oddities in naming, you give your kid something unique.   You also condemn not only yourself, but your child, to a lifetime of correcting people.   Trust me (and my name isn’t spelled all that oddly to begin with).

It will wear thin your patience.    But you only have yourself to blame  (or your parent if you’re the kid).

  1. I agree, I appreciate unique, but some parents just don’t get what they’re doing to their poor kids.

I’m one of those kids who had common names (Michael Brian) but I go by my middle name. So all through life I’ve had to correct people and let them know I go by Brian (which I don’t mind, I like the name Brian)….but it’s a pain. I feel sorry for poor K3v1n eL337 and his journey through life….

  3. I’ve contemplated formally changing mine to Sean, just to make life a little easier…    its not like I won’t open mail addressed with the correct spelling or something.

  5. I have a coworker named Joannie. No, it’s not pronounced “Joan-ee” as one would assume. It’s pronounced “Jo-ah-nee”. She’s in sales, and spends a lot of time correcting people. SMH

  7. Shaun Burks aw, I don’t know, I think Shaun is a cool name…it’s not really “out there” 🙂

Tom Moncho yeah, I have a lady in our church with a son named “Aaron” but she insists it’s pronounced “A-ron”

  9. Not a lifetime, just 18 years–or more like 12, as the child probably will not have many occasions to spell hir name out loud before age six. Possibly even less, if the child is truly determined or the name is uncommonly disruptive.

  11. I’m pretty sure i’ll be correcting people on the U in my name right up to the point I need a headstone.    I spell it out and their brains still go double-U.

  13. I meant that people can change their names. XD Not saying you should, or should not, but it is an alternative to a lifetime of correcting people.

Or, in my case, I changed it from one name that people get wrong to a different name that people get wrong. At least I only have myself to blame now! ^_^
