“Gender identity” and “gender presentation” are phrases commonly used in reference to trans* topics, but I have never heard “gender orientation” before. O_o

Neither had I. It just came up in my annual business ethics training. I assume it’s referring to transgendered folks. Maybe I shall solicit clarification, as its not a standard phrasing. School them a bit. 😛

In that case, I have no idea. Googling it did not turn up much–a few pages that equate it with “gender identity” and a few that equate it with “sexual orientation”. -_-

I don’t see how the phrase offers anything not covered by “gender identity”, “gender presentation” and/or “gender expression” (none of which are insensitive or incautious, as far as I know). The word “orientation” is so firmly associated with “sexual orientation” that using it to talk about trans issues is likely to reinforce the already common tendency to conflate gender and sexuality. >_<

(Mind you, I do not claim that any kind of jargon will “fix” that misconception. That’s pretty much only going to happen with education and exposure, which is pretty rough on the trans people who engage in it.)

]]>It seems fair to ask for clarification, especially since it is training! Maybe they just mean “sexual orientation” but do not want to say “sex”? XD
