This is a highly ambitious plan. There will no doubt be setbacks. But the road to Mars is about to open.

  1. We’ll find out. We’ve done several simulations involving live humans isolated from the rest of the world to evaluate the psychological impacts of such a journey. It’s not without its risks.

  4. Exactly. Definitely challenges and lots of unknowns. Though, we know a lot more about the Martian environment than we knew about the Moon when we first went there!

  7. My worry is with unforeseen engineering defects. I think all the apparatus should be field tested in the moon first to work out the bugs. It’s much easier to get to the moon in an emergency that mars. If emergency resupply of food/water/oxygen is needed, the moon is 3-4 days away. The closest mars ever is to earth is 9-10 months. Space is dangerous, no surprise there. EVERYTHING used to/on/return from mars MUST be perfect. I wonder if current plans call for pre supply of food/water/oxygen to be sent to mars before the manner mission is sent

  10. human must be there . unmaned is wrong way. human be transfer to mars .for example in earth on oil.gas offshore platform unmaned! .same as space station .on offshore platform everyday have problem!!! . so on mars need a human !!!

  13. SpaceX has a stated ambition of colonization of the red planet. They also have the common sense to vet their hardware and support systems before risking anyone’s life.
